Gregor and the Marks of Secret: An Acrostic Poem

Gregor and the Marks of Secret
by Baylin Stich

Gregor
Resident of the Overland
Extraordinarily normal boy who
Gets taught echolocation by no
Ordinary resident of the Underland:
Ripred, a giant rat.

Another adventure awaits Gregor.
No more mice in their homes
Decides the path

That he and the Queen, Luxa,
Have to take to save their
Extra-special allies.

Mice of a most giant size
Are running for their lives.
Rats hunt them and
Kill them,
So they can control more land.

Off Gregor and the Underlanders go,
Friends in search of hidden friends.

Secret marks written
Eventually found and translated
Create a trail no
Rats can follow.
Every prophecy comes
True.

Note: Baylin crafted this poem as part of a book report assignment. An acrostic poem is one in which you use a word or phrase to create the first letter of each line in a poem. In this case, Baylin used the title of the book he was reporting. His original drafts rambled and listed. Kyle worked with him to identify plot and motivation. In taking these steps, Baylin was able to revise his summary into a much more concise piece.
